Gunman jailed for at least 26 years for Hogmanay shooting

Hunter admitted a contract killing of suspected organised crime figure Marc Webley and attempted murder of a bystander; accomplices pleaded guilty to perverting justice, court heard.

  • Grant Hunter, 34, pleaded guilty last month at the High Court in Edinburgh to murdering Marc Webley, 38, outside the Anchor Inn in Granton, Edinburgh on December 31, 2023.
  • Prosecutor Graeme Jessop KC said on January 1 that Hunter `expected to be paid a substantial amount for the shooting` after a paid contract, with Webley suspected of organised crime.
  • CCTV footage shown in court captured Hunter pulling up in a stolen Hyundai SUV wearing a balaclava, removing his mask, discharging four shots and wounding Stewart Pearson.
  • Hunter was arrested on January 4, 2024 after police identified him from CCTV; Emma McVie, 27, and Gary Robertson admitted perverting justice and await sentencing Wednesday at the High Court in Glasgow.
  • At a previous hearing, Judge Frank Mulholland warned the violence should not become the norm, saying `the streets of Edinburgh and Scotland are not war zones, this is not Chicago in 1930s`.
