Chester County School Closes Friday After Confirmed Measles Case
The district said unvaccinated students must stay home for 21 days after possible exposure as Pennsylvania cases top 1,000, officials said.
Oxford Area High School in Chester County closed Friday, October 9, after a confirmed measles case was identified within the school community, with the district announcing the closure to families Thursday.
Pennsylvania confronts the United States' largest measles outbreak in 35 years, with 1,078 cases and 207 hospitalizations reported across 39 counties this year; Chester County accounts for 86 of those cases.
Unvaccinated individuals or those lacking proof of vaccination cannot attend school or school functions and must quarantine for 21 days, according to the Chester County Health Department's requirements verified during the closure.
Superintendent David Woods stated the district completed enhanced cleaning "out of an abundance of caution," while the Chester County Health Department leads the public health response and contacts individuals who may have been exposed.
Two doses of the MMR vaccine are 97% effective at preventing measles, the CDC says, yet Pennsylvania reported its fifth measles death last week in an unvaccinated Lancaster County resident, underscoring the outbreak's toll.
