The Stereotype over 50s Find Most Irritating Is that They’re Bad with Technology
A Staysure poll of 2,000 UK adults finds 59% of over-50s reject stereotypes about technology use and lifestyle, promoting a more youthful and active image.
- Staysure, the travel insurance provider, commissioned research and used choir Somewhere 2 Sing to perform `Where the Sun Don’t Shine` in its TV advert, and launched a UK adult choirs competition offering a 20k prize closing 12th April 2026.
- Younger people’s assumptions drive many of the stereotypes, with 48 per cent saying they make judgments without experience, while over-50s find labels like bad with technology most irritating.
- A poll of 2,000 adults found 33 per cent of over‑50s bristle at being called resistant to change, while the average 50‑something spends three hours gaming weekly and runs two long distances.
- Staysure says the campaign is about championing different ages, not stereotyping, and notes 20 per cent rate singing as a great activity; 83 per cent of those say it boosts mood and lowers stress.
- While younger adults often express negative assumptions, many under‑30s say people aged 50 to 59 aren’t ‘old’ until 68 versus 56 years and 11 months, with 72 per cent knowledgeable about world travel and more than four in 10 taking up to four holidays yearly.
