Over the last 24 hours, the Greek Coast Guard, assisted by cargo ships, saved about 400 asylum seekers along the island of Gavdos, south of Crete, in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Another 33 migrants were spotted yesterday afternoon on the beach of Tripiti in Gavdos. They are 30 men from Sudan and 3 women from Somalia. All of them are to be transferred by ship to the port of Chora Sfakone this afternoon and from there in the evening to Agia Chania. www.ertnews.gr


Crete, Gavdos hit by wave of migrant arrivals
In less than 24 hours, 731 migrants, including many families and children, arrived on Crete and Gavdos. “The shelter in Agia had just emptied of those who arrived on June 5, and now it’s full again,” said Hania’s deputy mayor.
Rescue teams rescued about 400 asylum seekers in the last 24 hours along Gavdos, a small Greek island south of Crete, in the eastern Mediterranean, announced the Greek coast guard today. The Greek port police and the European Frontex agency carried out a rescue operation on Friday night to save 352 people on board a fishing vessel along Gavdos, according to the same source. The operation took 30 nautical miles (about 55 km) from the coast.
