KOMANDA, ITURI PROVINCE, DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, JUL 27 – At least 43 worshippers, including children, were killed during a night prayer vigil as militants linked to Islamic State attacked and burned homes in a mineral-rich conflict zone.
- On July 27, 2025, the Allied Democratic Forces attacked a Catholic church in Komanda, killing at least 43 people, including children, around 1 a.m.
- The Allied Democratic Forces formed in Uganda in the late 1990s and shifted into DRC after 2002, fueled by regional politics, ethnic rivalries, and mineral resource competition.
- The attackers, according to Dieudonne Duranthabo, stormed the church at around 1 a.m., opening fire, using machetes, and burning houses and shops.
