Spokane Nears Containment as Bald Range Fire Keeps Growing
The Bald Range fire generated its own weather and sent flames up to 200 feet as crews rescued more than 50 people, officials said.
- On Saturday, British Columbia Premier David Eby declared a provincial state of emergency as the Bald Range Fire forced more than 20,000 residents from their homes in Summerland, Peachland, and surrounding communities.
- The blaze began Friday and displayed rank six behavior—the most extreme classification possible—by Sunday morning, generating its own weather system with flames soaring 200 feet while scorching at least 53 square miles.
- Forests Minister Ravi Parmar said more than 50 people were rescued by 18 aircraft as search-and-rescue teams continued looking for anyone trapped. Officials reported "significant structure loss" but crews could not yet assess full damage due to active hazardous conditions.
- An 80-year-old woman died while fleeing her home as families like the Goodmans escaped to West Kelowna. Salvation Army officer Rob Henson noted that migrant workers and residents are "just uncertain," facing displacement without clothing or supplies.
- Canada remains extremely vulnerable to wildfires, with more than 4 million hectares burned so far in 2026, an area roughly the size of Switzerland. Experts warn emergency evacuations will persist as annual temperatures increase roughly twice as fast as the global average.
