Man Walking 150 Miles with Shelter Dogs
Bret Shepard has logged 22 miles so far and says short walks help more than 120 dogs calm down and get noticed by adopters.
Ottumwa resident Bret Shepherd is walking 150 miles with rescue dogs this summer to assist the Heartland Humane Society in Iowa.
With over 120 dogs in care, the shelter operates at full capacity and cannot accept more animals, forcing staff to provide only bare necessities.
Shepherd has completed 22 miles walking approximately 15 to 20 dogs so far, posting social media updates that showcase their behavior on a leash to potential adopters.
Short 10 to 15-minute walks help the dogs 'chill,' according to assistant manager Courtney Monohon, as seeing them in action offers insights static photos cannot provide.
Shepherd hopes to inspire others to donate time during lunch or summer breaks, offering the first walk free through his business, Lucky's Dog Walks.
