Carney Isn't Ruling Out a Quebec-Style Immigration Deal for Alberta
Carney says the federal government is getting intake to sustainable levels as provinces press for more control over immigration policy.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Ottawa will "not budge" from sustainable immigration goals, asserting the federal government is "getting them to that level now."
This follows a referendum where just over a million Albertans voted to demand more provincial control over immigration policy to reduce newcomers to sustainable levels.
About 53 per cent of voters supported the referendum question, which called for greater local authority to manage newcomer numbers and ensure necessary service delivery.
On Tuesday, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre criticized the Liberals, claiming they let immigration run "totally out of control" and arguing provinces need more oversight for services.
Federal immigration levels are due for an update next month, though Immigration Minister Lena Diab declined to answer reporters' questions about the policy during Wednesday's caucus meeting.
