Ottawa under increasing pressure to show how policy changes are affecting emissions
Officials say Ottawa still lacks full modelling on recent climate policy changes as Parliament questions whether Canada can meet its emissions targets.
On Thursday, Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin faced intense questioning at a committee hearing regarding the government's failure to produce modeling showing how recent climate policy changes affect Canada's emissions targets.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has faced criticism for months for backsliding on climate initiatives, repealing the consumer carbon price and scrapping the electric vehicles sales mandate since taking office.
Environment Canada Deputy Minister Mollie Johnson acknowledged the department has "some work to do" on crunching the numbers to determine the impact on Canada's emissions, citing lack of detail in policy announcements.
Environmental Defence executive director Tim Gray called the testimony "defending the indefensible," while Climate Action Network Canada executive director Caroline Brouillette said policy decisions are doing the "exact contrary" of climate commitments.
Under the Paris Agreement, Canada committed to reducing emissions by 40 to 45 per cent from 2005 levels by 2030, yet a Canadian Climate Institute study suggests the country is not on track to meet any climate targets.
