Ottawa records 60 per cent spike in arrests, detentions of Canadians in United States
Ottawa said the rise came despite a 25% drop in U.S. visits by Canadians and no clear explanation for the increase.
Global Affairs Canada's annual report tracks a 60 per cent spike in arrest and detention cases involving Canadians over the past year, despite a 25 per cent decline in visits to the country.
While the report does not explain the increase, President Donald Trump has expanded immigration raids, and Canadians have reported facing uncomfortable questions from border officials.
Arrests of Canadians globally rose during the reporting period, including a threefold increase in Thailand, according to the department's data.
More Canadians are voluntarily registering with the department when traveling abroad, which helps Ottawa provide safety advice and coordinate evacuations.
Global Affairs Canada warns that growing frequencies of wars and natural disasters are making consular cases more complex and expensive to manage.
