Ottawa pumps the brakes on proposed changes to major project environmental reviews
The government says it needs more time to gather views on proposals that could let some projects advance before review and alter species protections.
On Thursday, June 4, 2026, Ottawa extended the public consultation period on proposed environmental review changes to July 22, aiming to gather a full range of stakeholder views before advancing legislation.
Discussion papers released last month by Ottawa proposed approving major projects before environmental review and exempting certain projects from laws protecting species at risk.
Critics, including Green Party Leader Liz May, have warned that these changes would put environmental protections in jeopardy, raising concerns about the proposal's environmental implications.
The government now plans to introduce legislation in the fall instead of soon, providing extra months to incorporate feedback from the extended consultation period.
Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said there are "enormous issues at play," explaining the government's commitment to securing comprehensive feedback before finalizing the regulatory framework.
