Ottawa police identify father believed to be responsible for double-murder suicide

Police say the 40-year-old man was linked to fires at his dental practice and a vehicle lot before investigators found the boys dead.

  • On Monday, 40-year-old Mohammed Al-Lami killed his two sons, aged seven and 12, in a south Ottawa home before dying by suicide in a Kemptville vehicle fire, according to the Ottawa Police Service.
  • Al-Lami was on probation for threatening to cause bodily harm to his ex-wife in 2024; Justice Norman Boxall noted during an April 10 proceeding that he sent an email containing "an explicit threat."
  • Investigators are linking the deaths to a business fire in Iroquois and a vehicle fire near Highway 416, while also probing the firebombing of Al-Lami's dental practice in a nearby village.
  • The Ottawa Police Service "recognizes the community's desire for answers" but says forensic examinations remain ongoing; the force is supporting the mother "as she grieves this unimaginable loss" while withholding the children's names.
  • If you or someone you know is in crisis, call or text 988 for the Suicide Crisis Helpline in Canada; for immediate help in an emergency, please call 911.
