Feds greenlight $70B mine project in northern Ont.
The approval clears a major regulatory hurdle and could unlock $2.5 billion in financing for a mine expected to be one of the world’s largest.
On Friday, July 31, 2026, Environment Minister Julie Dabrusin issued a positive Decision Statement for Canada Nickel's Crawford Nickel Project near Timmins, Ontario, marking the first mining approval under the amended Impact Assessment Act since 2019.
Prime Minister Mark Carney's Major Projects Office prioritized Crawford to accelerate resource development and reduce Canada's reliance on foreign supply chains, particularly those controlled by China and Indonesia.
Crawford will attract $5 billion in investment and create 5,000 construction jobs, with the mine estimated to contribute $70 billion to Canada's GDP over its 41-year lifespan.
Canada Nickel established a $20 million equity partnership with the Taykwa Tagamou Nation, the largest First Nation investment in a critical minerals project in Canada, while the government attached legally binding conditions to mitigate environmental impacts.
Despite the approval, Canada Nickel must secure $2.5 billion in financing before construction; the company expects to make a formal construction decision in 2027, with first production targeted for 2029.
