Ottawa Announces $254 Million For New Brunswick Port Upgrades
The funding will expand warehouses, rail links and customs facilities, and officials say it could raise annual container capacity to 1 million.
On Wednesday, Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon announced the federal government will invest up to $254 million to upgrade Port Saint John, enhancing capacity at New Brunswick's largest ocean port.
The investment draws from the $5-billion Trade Diversification Corridor Fund, which stipulates up to 50 per cent federal cost-sharing for provincial, municipal, Indigenous, and private partners upgrading infrastructure.
Infrastructure upgrades feature a new Canada Border Services Agency container examination facility, reconfiguration of the complex Simms Corner intersection, and upgrade of 103 kilometres of New Brunswick Southern Railway track.
Jointly filed with the Saint John Port Authority and J.D. Irving Limited, the project aims to dramatically expand capacity to handle up to one million shipping containers annually.
University of New Brunswick economics professor Constantine Passaris described the expansion as an 'insurance policy,' stating "Plan B is to diversify our exports to go to foreign markets" if U.S. trade deals fail.
