OPP, CBSA Recover 306 Stolen Vehicles in Sprawling International Auto-Theft Probe

Ontario Provincial Police arrested 20 suspects and recovered 306 stolen vehicles valued at $25 million in a ring exporting luxury cars to the Middle East and West Africa.

  • During search warrants on Oct. 16 and Nov. 27, investigators seized a re-vinned vehicle, key programmers, numerous Ontario licence plates, vehicle shipping documents and more than $190,000 in Canadian currency.
  • Police say recovered vehicles are worth about $25 million, multiple agencies including the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada Border Services Agency and Sûreté du Québec assisted, and six remain in custody while three were released on conditions.
  • OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique warned that auto thefts surged from around 17,000 in 2020 to more than 30,000 in 2023, costing Canadians over $1 billion annually as investigations continue.
