ChatGPT 5.5 Is All About Math, Science and AI Research
OpenAI says the upgrade is faster and more token-efficient, with stronger safeguards and higher benchmark scores for coding, research and other multi-step work.
- On Thursday, OpenAI released GPT-5.5, its newest artificial intelligence model, rolling it out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise subscribers for improved coding, research, and computer operations.
- The release arrives just six weeks after GPT-5.4, demonstrating fierce competition between frontier AI labs for enterprise customers as OpenAI President Greg Brockman called the update a "new class of intelligence."
- OpenAI describes the model as its "smartest and most intuitive to use model" yet, capable of parsing "messy business" into actionable plans and operating as a "faster, sharper thinker" using "significantly fewer" tokens.
- Early testing by The Bank showed impressive "hallucination resistance" that CIO Leigh-Ann Russell noted is critical for regulated institutions, while API access requires "different safeguards" and will arrive "very soon."
- As companies race to potentially go public later this year, the launch coincides with a high-profile trial between Elon Musk and OpenAI executives Sam Altman and Greg Brockman set to begin on Monday in Oakland, California.
