OpenAI to Test Ads in ChatGPT in Bid to Boost Revenue

OpenAI will test labeled ads in ChatGPT’s free and Go tiers to fund AI infrastructure, reaching 800 million weekly users while keeping paid tiers ad-free.

  • On Jan 16, OpenAI announced tests of labeled ads in ChatGPT free tier and Go plan for U.S. users, marking the start of U.S. ad trials.
  • Facing heavy costs, OpenAI said ads aim to unlock revenue to fund infrastructure as it plans to spend more than $1 trillion on AI infrastructure by 2030, increasing pressure ahead of an initial public offering .
  • The company explained ads will be clearly labeled and separated from responses, appear at the bottom of answers when a `relevant sponsored product or service` exists, and can be dismissed or personalized, with conversations not shared with marketers.
  • Users on paid tiers including Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise will not see ads, while ChatGPT Go expands to the U.S. at $8 per month, unlocking revenue from 800 million weekly active users, analysts say.
  • Earlier this month reporting said internal ad tests were underway and described as novel, while users flooded social media in December with suggestion complaints and OpenAI faces a copyright lawsuit from Ziff Davis.
