The $25 billion joint venture aims to create Latin America’s first AI data center, supporting public sector AI use and generating economic growth, officials said.
- On Friday, OpenAI and Sur Energy signed a letter of intent to build a massive AI data centre in Argentina's Patagonia region, involving a $25 billion investment, Argentina's government said.
- As part of its Stargate initiative, Argentina's government said the plan is the first Stargate project in Latin America and will use RIGI's 30-year fiscal and customs benefits.
- A facility will have capacity of up to 500 MW and be developed as a joint venture between Sur Energy and a global cloud infrastructure provider, with OpenAI as main buyer.
- The programme will help public employees, administrators and research institutions in Argentina streamline work, reduce costs and improve public services while supporters called it a historic opportunity to create jobs and attract investment.
- Earlier this week, OpenAI touted new partnerships at its developer conference, highlighting more than 800 million weekly ChatGPT users and its $500 billion valuation.
