ChatGPT-Creator OpenAI Announces Massive New Data Center in Michigan
The Stargate data center will create 2,500 union construction jobs and over 450 permanent high-skill jobs while using up to 1.4 gigawatts of power, officials said.
- On Oct. 30, OpenAI, Oracle and Related Digital announced a 2.2-million-square-foot Stargate data center in Saline Township beginning early 2026.
- Last month the Saline Township board voted against rezoning the 575-acre site, prompting Related Digital to sue and reach a settlement last week with a DTE Energy deal.
- DTE said providing power will increase system demand roughly 25% and add 1.4 gigawatts, while developers will fund a $2 billion battery facility and the campus will use a closed-loop cooling system.
- Gov. Gretchen Whitmer hailed the deal as Michigan's largest economic project, promising 2,500 temporary construction jobs, more than 450 onsite jobs, $14 million for local fire departments and farmland preservation, and more than 700 acres preserved.
- Combined Stargate projects will bring over 8 gigawatts of capacity and more than $2 billion in investment, while utilities plan new fossil-fuel plants amid Michigan climate law requiring 100% clean energy by 2040.
