OpenAI Debuts GPT-5.5 Claiming Agentic Coding and Research Gains

OpenAI says the new models handle multi-step tasks with less hand-holding and cut missed vulnerabilities to 10% in testing, according to one benchmark report.

  • On Thursday, OpenAI introduced GPT-5.5 and GPT-5.5 Pro, its latest general-purpose models with significant improvements in coding and complex task handling across ChatGPT and Codex platforms.
  • OpenAI claims the models offer "faster help for harder problems" with reduced manual oversight, while researcher Soumitra Shukla of Harvard's AI Institute noted the system "just gets it" during Codex testing.
  • Nvidia provided early access to more than 10,000 employees, and benchmark results showed GPT-5.5 reduced vulnerability rates to 10%, down from 40% in GPT-5, marking significant security-critical gains.
  • Blogger Simon Willison described the model as "fast, effective and highly capable" but noted the lack of API access; OpenAI says it is coming "very soon" for developers.
  • Pennsylvania professor Ethan Mollick observes it is "increasingly hard to quickly demonstrate each generational change" as tasks become trivial, while OpenAI and Anthropic continue moving in near lockstep with competing releases.
