OpenAI expects to burn through almost $280 billion by 2030, FT reports

The ChatGPT maker expects revenue to rise tenfold to $350 billion in 2030 while spending $856 billion on computing and infrastructure, FT said.

  • On Friday, the Financial Times reported that OpenAI projects it will burn through $278 billion in cash between 2026 and 2030, driven by aggressive investment in computing capacity for its AI models.
  • Though OpenAI expects revenue to increase tenfold to $350 billion by 2030, the company plans to spend about $856 billion on computing power and infrastructure, with expenses vastly outpacing gains.
  • OpenAI raised $122 billion in March at an $852 billion valuation but is on track to exhaust that cash by 2028; the ChatGPT-maker is seeking fresh investment valuing the company at about $1.2 trillion.
  • CEO Sam Altman said on Saturday the company "would not go public in 2026 because of concerns about AI safety", though OpenAI filed confidentially for an IPO in June and may delay the timeline.
  • Another funding round would provide flexibility for OpenAI as it navigates high infrastructure costs; Bloomberg reported earlier this week that fresh investment could support mergers and acquisitions, potentially delaying the listing by one or two quarters.
