OpenAI developing AI devices including smart speaker, The Information ...
OpenAI is working with Jony Ive to produce its first hardware, a smart speaker launching next year and not released before March 2027, The Information reports.
Last May, OpenAI’s acquisition of Jony Ive’s hardware company for nearly $6.5 billion underpins the hardware push, with LoveFrom leading design and OpenAI’s internal devices team building the products.
The reported speaker will include a camera that captures surroundings and uses Face ID–style facial recognition to identify people and allow purchases, according to unnamed people cited by The Information.
Reported staffing and pricing point to a consumer-market focus, with the smart speaker likely priced between $200 and $300 and over 200 employees dedicated to the project.
Beyond the speaker, additional devices face uncertain timelines as OpenAI’s smart glasses and smart lamp remain undeveloped while Apple and other hardware makers push AI gadgets.
