Ontario is proposing to give enhanced political authority to 169 mayors, starting in May. It was originally introduced in Toronto and Ottawa in 2022, and has gradually rolled out across the province ever since — including in Windsor, Chatham-Kent and Sarnia.
Province extends 'strong mayor' powers to Perth municipalities
The region’s six mayors were handed sweeping new powers and responsibilities April 9 when the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing announced plans to expand “strong mayor powers” to 169 municipalities, including West Perth.
