Ontario Liberals set to pick byelection candidate amid jabs in nomination race
Nate Erskine-Smith’s bid has drawn scrutiny as rivals say the party should choose a local candidate before a byelection due by August.
Ontario Liberal members will select their candidate for the Scarborough Southwest byelection on Saturday in a contested nomination featuring federal MP Nate Erskine-Smith and several local contenders.
The riding became vacant after the former representative moved to federal politics, intensifying a nomination race reflecting the party's search for leadership following Bonnie Crombie's resignation earlier this year.
Rival candidates Qadira Jackson and Ahsanul Hafiz have questioned Erskine-Smith's residency and motives, with Jackson stating, "He has explicitly said that he ran here so that he can have a seat to run for leader."
Interim Liberal leader John Fraser dismissed internal friction as "a regular, everyday nomination," while Jackson and Hafiz coordinated ranked ballot strategies to secure the nomination.
With The Progressive Conservatives yet to name a candidate and The NDP selecting Fatima Shaban, the Liberal winner must mobilize quickly for a compressed campaign ahead of the mandatory August byelection.
