Ford government breaks from legislature until March 23
The Ontario legislature will pause for 14 weeks after a 51-day session amid controversy over a $2.5 billion fund and criticism of reduced legislative scrutiny.
On Dec. 11, 2025, Government House Leader Steve Clark said the Ontario legislature will begin a 14-week winter break following a 19-week summer break and will not resume until March 23.
Government House Leader Steve Clark said MPPs need time to consult communities and implement legislation, while opposition parties contend the break limits Question Period oversight.
Records show the government sat 51 days over around 13 weeks, passing 12 government bills, six private members bills, seven private members motions, and 15 private bills with 55 committee hearings.
The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating funds Keel Digital Solutions received from the Ministry of Colleges and Universities after the Auditor General found the selection process was not fair, transparent or accountable, prompting critics to urge action against Labour Minister David Piccini.
With fewer sitting days, ministers can choose public appearances and avoid daily questioning, while Liberal parliamentary leader John Fraser warned the skills fund controversy requires longer sittings and calls for Eglinton Crosstown inquiry persist as the government prepares its provincial budget next year.
