Ontario influenza ICU admissions up 127% in past week, hospital association warns
Ontario hospitals report ICU flu admissions up 127% and hospitalizations up 84%, urging vaccinations to reduce severe illness and healthcare system strain, officials said.
- For the week of December 12, the Ontario Hospital Association reported daily confirmed flu patients rose 150 per cent, hospital admissions increased 84 per cent, and ICU admissions jumped 127 per cent.
- Public-Health data show influenza trends that include Influenza A positivity higher than the last three seasons, while COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus remain fairly stable, the OHA said.
- The OHA is urging eligible Ontarians to get vaccinated as soon as possible, stressing the flu shot remains the best defence against severe illness and hospitalization this year.
- On Tuesday the OHA released data showing a serious rise in influenza across Ontario, following the Eastern Ontario Health Unit reporting three kids have died from influenza A-related complications since December.
- With peaks possible as early as mid-December in some regions, flu season is officially here with cases and hospitalizations steadily increasing, the Ontario Hospital Association said.
