Ontario college support workers reach tentative deal after more than a month on strike
More than 10,000 support staff at 24 Ontario colleges end a five-week strike over funding cuts, automation, and outsourcing, union says.
- On Oct. 15, 2025, OPSEU/SEFPO announced a tentative deal with the College Employer Council, and picket lines will come down as support staff return Thursday, October 16.
- Citing funding decisions, the union said Premier Doug Ford's government underfunded Ontario's public college system and accused OPSEU of diverting Skills Development Fund money into corporate handouts.
- Negotiators note that talks between OPSEU and the College Employer Council began in June and a private weekend mediation broke a bargaining impasse, the union said at 4 a.m. Wednesday.
- The employer said the tentative agreement must be ratified by Nov. 4 and picketing will end while OPSEU/SEFPO members review the settlement Wednesday afternoon.
- Beyond this deal, OPSEU/SEFPO, representing more than 50,000 workers at 24 Ontario public colleges, cited over 10,000 job losses and more than 600 program cuts last year and vowed to continue the fight.
