Ontario expands energy efficiency programs to eligible appliances

Ontario will offer up to $200 rebates on energy-efficient appliances and raise project funding from $5 million to $15 million for public sector organizations, supporting a $10.9 billion energy plan.

  • Starting this fall, Energy Minister Stephen Lecce announced rebates of up to $200 for energy-efficient appliances for all Ontario households and condos meeting program criteria.
  • Earlier this year the Home Renovation Savings Program launched with rebates for renovations like windows, doors, insulation and heat pumps, and Lecce pledged to expand it to appliances.
  • Eligible appliances must meet energy-conservation targets and replace less-efficient electric models; devices can be purchased from online and in-store retailers, with rebates paid within 60 days of approval.
  • Ontario is raising public project caps from $5 million to $15 million, the province said, boosting support for larger energy-efficiency projects in various sectors.
  • The province says its broader energy-efficiency framework will reduce peak demand by 3,000 megawatts by 2036, equivalent to taking three million homes off the grid, and the first phase cut 226 megawatts, removing more than 220,000 homes.
