Ontario delays 'last orders' during World Cup
On Tuesday, Ontario announced that licensed bars and restaurants can serve alcohol until 4 a.m. during the FIFA World Cup, extending hours from June 11 to July 19, 2026.
Ontario Attorney General Doug Downey stated the initiative helps fans "fully experience the energy" of the tournament while supporting local businesses. The province has previously authorized similar temporary changes for major sporting events.
Stan Cho, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming, said the measure supports the tourism sector. The LCBO will extend hours at 27 stores across the Greater Toronto Area and Ottawa during the event.
Residents and international visitors express mixed reactions, with some welcoming vibrant nightlife while others acknowledge potential late-night chaos. Premier Doug Ford encouraged fans to "gather, watch, and celebrate" during the tournament.
Toronto is set to host six matches, with the first game on June 12 featuring Team Canada against Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field. The tournament concludes with the final match in New Jersey on July 19.
