Final Round of Ontario Speed Limit Increases Now in Effect on 89% of Provincial Highways
The province says the changes cover highways designed for higher speeds and keep drivers at 150 km/h or more subject to stunt driving charges.
On Wednesday, the Ontario government raised speed limits from 100 kilometres per hour to 110 kilometres per hour on nine highway sections, completing a summer-long initiative to standardize provincial travel speeds.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria announced the plan in June to bring just under 90 per cent of the provincial highway network to 110 kilometres per hour, targeting only roads designed to safely accommodate higher speeds.
These changes mean 89 per cent of the province's highway network now has 110 km/h limits, with Highways 412, 418, and 407 ensuring all 400-series highways throughout the Durham Region share the same limit.
Drivers caught traveling at 150 kilometres per hour or more remain subject to stunt driving charges, as strict enforcement continues despite the higher speed threshold.
This summer's final push follows incremental adjustments made by Ontario in 2022 and 2024, representing the latest phase in the province's ongoing effort to update provincial speed regulations on major roadways.
