One year of salmonella pistachio outbreak as cases reach 189

Health officials say 26 people have been hospitalized and dozens of pistachio products recalled as the investigation continues.

  • One year after the first infection, The Public Health Agency of Canada continues its investigation into a salmonella outbreak linked to pistachios. Total illnesses have reached 189, with cases reported as recently as last month.
  • The Canadian Food Inspection Agency implemented a ban on imports from Iran in September to contain the outbreak. The agency has also issued dozens of product recalls for various brands, including raw kernels and trail mixes.
  • With 88 cases in Quebec and 74 in Ontario, illnesses have spread across six provinces including British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba and New Brunswick. Twenty-six people have required hospitalization with symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, fever and chills.
  • While most people recover fully on their own, the infection poses significant risks to young children and people over 60. Pregnant women and those with weakened immune systems should also exercise caution.
  • Recalled items span a wide range of products, from Dubai chocolate to pistachio cranberry chocolate chunk biscotti, trail mixes and raw kernels. Officials advise Canadians to avoid consuming any pistachios imported from Iran.
