One year later: Minnesota lawmakers reflect on lasting impacts of June 14
Lawmakers approved $52 million for security and honored Melissa Hortman with new legislation as they reflected on the attack’s lasting impact.
Tomorrow marks one year since the deadly June 14, 2025, attack on Minnesota lawmakers that claimed House Speaker Melissa Hortman's life. Legislators are reflecting on the tragedy's enduring impact as they commemorate the anniversary.
The assailant targeted a list of Democrats, murdering Hortman and seriously injuring Sen. John Hoffman. State Sen. Erin Maye Quade recalled the fear of knowing her name and home address were on the killer's hit list.
Lawmakers passed legislation this year providing $52 million for enhanced Capitol and individual security. The state created a Minnesota State Patrol unit to protect politicians, while members can draw up to $4,500 from operating funds for home safety.
Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson recalled his own daughter's fear when a State Patrol vehicle appeared at their home. His teenage son still checks that doors are locked nightly, illustrating how the job's atmosphere has changed for families.
House DFL Leader Zack Stephenson noted that people are attempting to be more mindful and not to "lose sight of the humanity" in one another. Legislators are urging colleagues to prioritize such rhetoric as the state reflects on the tragedy's lasting lessons.
