One security force member killed, 2 wounded in Aleppo suicide attack, Syria says
The attacker, linked to Islamic State, killed one officer and injured two while attempting to enter a Christian neighborhood during New Year security operations.
- On Wednesday, one Syrian police officer was killed and two other police officers wounded in a suicide bombing in Aleppo, northern city, Syrian state media and The Associated Press reported.
- During New Year security duties, a patrol of the Internal Security Forces was securing celebrations near Bab al-Faraj archaeological site on Wednesday when it spotted and chased the suspect.
- An officer who restrained the attacker managed to physically restrain him when the man detonated an explosive belt, officials speaking to state media said.
- No group immediately claimed responsibility for Wednesday's bombing, and Nour al-Din al-Baba said the attacker appeared to be trying to enter a Christian neighbourhood containing a number of churches.
- Last week, at least eight people were killed and 18 wounded by explosives planted in an Alawite mosque in Homs, and Saraya Ansar al-Sunna claimed responsibility for the attack.
