One person dies in tent fire at Sudbury homeless encampment
Authorities are investigating the cause of a fatal tent fire at a city-designated homeless encampment where more than 200 people reside, police said.
- On Jan. 12, a tent fire at the Energy Court encampment in downtown Sudbury killed one person found inside the tent after individuals extinguished the blaze around 10 p.m.
- The City of Greater Sudbury set up 24 Energy Ct. as an overnight warming centre in 2024, offering washrooms, drinks, snacks and connections to housing-focused services.
- Residents used snow to extinguish the blaze, and on-site security alerted emergency services as officers, firefighters and paramedics responded to the Energy Court encampment on Jan. 12.
- Investigators are working with the Coroner's Office and the Ontario Fire Marshal, and the coroner will perform a post-mortem as the cause of the fire has not yet been determined, police said.
- The encampment has grown considerably in recent months, and late last year city officials said more than 200 people were living outdoors; police asked the public to call Greater Sudbury Police 705-675-9171 or Crime Stoppers 705-222-8477.
