Tent collapses as Virginia church celebrates 20th anniversary, killing 1 and injuring 22
A storm brought down a large tent during an outdoor service, and officials said 22 people were hospitalized while 11 others were released.
On Friday, a tent collapse at EastLake Community Church in Moneta, Bedford County, killed one person and hospitalized 22 others during the church's 20th anniversary service.
A National Weather Service Severe Thunderstorm Warning preceded the incident; Pastor Troy Keaton described a sudden "burst of wind" that lifted the tent as he dismissed the congregation.
First responders arrived immediately to provide care; Carilion Clinic is coordinating with local partners while officials confirmed 11 of the 22 hospitalized individuals have been released.
Virginia Delegate Sam Rasoul, who represents nearby Roanoke, wrote on Facebook that the tragedy struck "as the storm that just hit, knocked down a large tent." Rocky Mount Mayor Holland Perdue also expressed condolences.
EastLake Community Church officials announced they are "trusting in the Lord" for strength while navigating the situation as authorities investigate the collapse; the surrounding Lynchburg area remains under a Flash Flood Warning.
