First UK Town of Culture Competition for 'Unique' Stories
The competition offers £3 million to the winner and £250,000 to runners-up to fund arts-led projects that boost local pride and investment, officials said.
- The UK government announced the UK Town of Culture 2028, offering a £389 million prize and inviting towns to apply by March 31, 2026.
- The programme follows the Pride in Place scheme launched in November 2025, with Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy saying `There is so much for us to be proud of in the towns we’re from – from the rich, local history to unique festivals and celebrations.`
- Sir Phil Redmond will lead the judging panel, with shortlisted towns receiving £60,000 to develop bids and two runners-up awarded £250,000 each.
- Local investment could fund new arts venues and events, as Bradford, last year's UK City of Culture, is projected to deliver £389 million in growth and a 25 per cent rise in city-centre footfall.
- Arts minister Ian Murray said he has received 'some informal lobbying' and urged Paisley and Perth to submit expressions of interest, with the shortlist expected this Spring and judges seeking varied towns.
