1 Dead, 5 Injured After ‘Sneezing Fit’ Leads to Crash with Amish Buggy
Five people were injured after the car struck the Amish buggy head-on, and authorities said the cause remains under investigation.
On Friday, Sept. 4, a 37-year-old Wilton woman died and five others were injured when a 2025 Volkswagen Atlas struck an Amish buggy from behind on State Highway 131 in Tomah, Wis.
The 38-year-old driver of the Volkswagen reported having a "sneezing fit" just before the collision, telling deputies she did not see the buggy as both vehicles traveled south up a hill.
Four passengers in the buggy, ranging from 18 months to 24 years old, remain hospitalized with serious injuries, while the Volkswagen driver has been released from the hospital.
Emergency crews from the Oakdale Fire Department and Wisconsin State Patrol assisted the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at the scene, which led to a two-hour closure of State Highway 131.
The Monroe County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the incident, though officials stated that the identities of those involved will not be released at this time.
