Yankees Turn to Max Fried to Keep World Series Dream Alive
Max Fried will start despite his partner's expected birth, and the Yankees need a win to avoid becoming the 11th team to rally from 0-2 in a best-of-five series.
- On Wednesday, the New York Yankees host the Tampa Bay Rays for Game 3 of the American League Division Series, with Manager Aaron Boone announcing that left-hander Max Fried will start as the team trails 0-2.
- The Rays lead the series after defeating the Yankees in Game 1 and Game 2, capitalizing on New York's four errors in Monday's 5-2 loss and offensive struggles that produced only two runs.
- Max Fried confirmed Tuesday he will "definitely" start Game 3 despite his partner expecting a child soon, with pitching coach Matt Blake saying the team will "ride with him" to extend their postseason run.
- Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Nick Martinez, a former Fordham University student, takes the mound for Game 3, having finished the regular season 15-6 with a 3.10 ERA in his first year with the Rays.
- Facing a 0-2 deficit, the Yankees aim to become the 11th team in MLB history to rally and win a best-of-five series; no team has achieved this since the 2017 Yankees defeated Cleveland.
