In the space of a few days, following a flash offensive, the pro-Iranian Huthis insurgents took control of the entire Yemeni coast of the Red Sea. Already on Friday, they had seized the strategic strait of Bab al-Mandeb. The Houthis, who emerged from the Zaydi Shia community in northern Yemen, transformed from a political-religious movement in the 1990s into an armed force controlling large parts of Yemen. Their relations with Iran, the disruption of a critical Saudi Arabian pipeline, and their increasing control over Bab al-Mandeb have placed the Houthis on the world stage.
Middle East analyst Luciano Zaccara said it remains to be seen whether Saudi-backed Yemeni government forces can repel Houthi fighters after they seized strategic areas along the west coast. The statement comes as the war between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia continues.
