On this day in 1984: Deadly tornado struck Barneveld, Wisconsin, wiping out 90% of the village
The EF5 storm killed 9 people, injured about 200 and caused about $40 million in damage, according to the National Weather Service.
On June 8, 1984, an EF5 tornado struck Barneveld, Wisconsin, shortly before 1 a.m., killing nine people and destroying approximately 90% of the village in its wake.
Part of a severe weather outbreak spanning eight states across the Midwest, the tornado was the strongest of the system, beginning southwest of Barneveld at 12:41 a.m. local time.
The tornado traveled approximately 36 miles, leaving 200 injured and causing about $40 million in damage, while demolishing 93 homes and razing 17 of the village's 18 businesses.
Lasting on the ground for 59 minutes, the storm remains the second costliest in Wisconsin's history, with approximately $25 million of the total damage occurring within Barneveld alone.
Using Doppler radar systems, the National Weather Service now monitors thunderstorm activity to issue warnings for "imminent danger to life and property," reflecting how the village's experience shaped modern severe-weather preparedness.
