On Dragon Quest’s 40th anniversary, ‘it’s impossible to ignore its influence’
Square Enix revealed Dragon Quest XII Beyond Dreams during the Dragon Quest 40th anniversary, replacing the scrapped title Dragon Quest 12 The Flames of Fate after development problems forced a complete restart from scratch.
Development problems forced the studio to abandon its original direction entirely, prompting Square Enix to confirm the delay resulted from completely overhauling development rather than continuing with the original concept.
The redesigned game follows a young hero who is "beset by dreams" while he sleeps, introducing a completely different protagonist and storyline; it features an open-world design with tropical beaches and deserts while maintaining character designs from the late Akira Toriyama.
Square Enix released a lengthy trailer showcasing the new protagonist, characters, and gameplay, yet Dragon Quest XII Beyond Dreams currently lacks an announced release date and remains deep in development.
The project continues development as the sneak-peek trailer appeared visually polished despite ongoing work, with Square Enix providing no timeline for DQ12 Beyond Dreams' release.
