Oleshky ceasefire expires, Ukraine evacuates civilians from parts of Kherson region
The 6-day truce let 167 civilians, including 22 children, leave the Russian-occupied town before Russia refused an extension, officials said.
The six-day localized ceasefire in Oleshky ended on Sunday night as Russia refused an extension, despite US President Donald Trump calling for the truce to become a "starting point for lasting peace."
Before the truce expired, the Ukrainian military evacuated 167 more civilians from Oleshky, including 22 children and 21 people with limited mobility, in a joint operation with Moscow.
Local residents in the Kherson region described the six-day pause as a "breath of fresh air," utilizing the time to replenish food and medical supplies after four years of Russian occupation.
While the Oleshky truce concluded, Russian drone strikes continued elsewhere in Ukraine on Sunday, leaving hundreds of thousands of households without power, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported.
Moscow's refusal to extend the truce signals a return to active hostilities, though Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov expressed a positive view of the operation's coordination between the two countries.
In Moscow, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, quoted by Russian news agencies, said that Russia positively evaluates the implementation of the operation in Oleshki and the coordination of the human rights commissioners of the two countries.
