- The center was conceived to study the "heightened risks" for student-athletes, including harassment from gamblers. Hannah Allen-King, executive director of the William Magee Institute for Student Wellbeing, noted that college sports are central to Mississippi culture.
- Approved by the Institutions of Higher Learning Board of Trustees in February, the center will cost about $700,000 annually and train counselors to promote "evidence-based policies and programs to prevent harm."
- While the state House has voted to legalize mobile sports betting, Senate leaders plan to block the measure, even as proponents estimate the illegal market reached about $3 billion in 2024.
