Okanagan wildfires force expanded orders, alerts as First Nation assesses losses
The band is opening a reception centre in Penticton and seeking donations as more than 2,200 properties are evacuated under one emergency jurisdiction.
- Central Okanagan Emergency Management and the Regional District of North Okanagan expanded evacuation orders on Monday for the Quilpituk Creek and Bradley Creek wildfires, placing more than 2,200 properties under evacuation near Vernon.
- Weekend winds gusting up to 115 kilometres per hour fanned the flames, destroying homes as fire reached the water line, while provincial wildfire officials reported unprecedented conditions driven by prolonged drought.
- Firefighters continue battling the blazes, though Cliff Chapman, director of wildfire operations for the provincial wildfire service, reported crews cannot safely access certain zones due to damaged power lines, unsafe trees, and compromised infrastructure.
- The Penticton Indian Band established an Evacuation Reception Centre at Little Paws Daycare, operating daily from 10:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. to assist displaced residents from the Okanagan Valley.
- Evacuees can register for support or donate items such as cots and bedding at the centre, while the PIB thanked community members for their "generosity, kindness and support" during this emergency.
