Okanagan karate dojo brings home haul of medals at international competition
The 42-member team earned 12 gold, 18 silver and 15 bronze medals, but none of its competitors won a division Soke Cup.
The Okanagan Taneda Karate Dojo brought home 45 medals from the 2026 International Chito-Ryu Soke Cup in Gold Coast, Australia, including 12 gold, 18 silver, and 15 bronze medals.
Held every three years, the International Chito-Ryu Soke Cup draws global practitioners of the style. Taneda Karate Dojo sent a contingent of 42 competitors to the August tournament.
Sensei Chris Taneda earned his eighth-degree black belt, making him the highest-ranking person outside Japan in the Chito-Ryu style. Robert Simikins won two gold and one silver medal despite competing while injured.
Competitors emphasized the family-like atmosphere fostered within the team. Coach Michelle Cowan, training with the dojo since 1985, said she was inspired seeing all members cheer each other on regardless of medal outcomes.
Taneda said the team is preparing for the next event in Japan in 2029. He emphasized that karate is a "good vehicle for people to find out lots about themselves" through discipline and camaraderie.
