Ohio approves photo ID requirement to vote
Supporters said the amendment protects election integrity and makes future changes harder, while opponents argued it could burden eligible voters.
On Tuesday, November 3, 2026, Ohio voters approved Issue 3, enshrining a photo identification requirement for in-person voting into the state constitution.
The amendment reinforces existing 2023 law, House Bill 458, which Republican gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy championed to cement voting rules into the constitution.
Unofficial results show the measure passed with 2,713,248 votes, securing 66.0% support, and voters must now present valid identification such as an Ohio driver's license or U.S. passport.
House Minority Leader Dani Isaacsohn and the ACLU of Ohio opposed the measure, arguing voter fraud "happens so infrequently" that the requirement adds unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles.
The vote aligns with a national trend where 36 states require voter ID, while President Donald Trump advocates for the federal SAVE America Act to mandate similar requirements nationwide.
