Official says test reveals no contamination of a local water system after derailment
Testing found no water contamination above provincial safety limits in Kamloops Lake after over 80,000 litres of aviation fuel spilled in a train derailment, officials said.
- Michael Grenier, director for Area J of the Thompson-Nicola Regional District, said tests show no contamination of the Savona Community Water System after over 80,000 litres of aviation fuel spilled on Kamloops Lake.
- The Nov. 1 derailment involved a locomotive and 17 rail cars near Cherry Creek, about 20 kilometres west of Kamloops; Canadian Pacific Kansas City said it remains fully committed to cleanup and cause investigation.
- Tests were conducted at the intake for the Savona Community Water System, and samples taken earlier this week showed no detections above provincial safety thresholds while analysis continues for the Walhachin community water system.
- Savona, home to about 700 residents, has containment booms along the Kamloops Lake shore and cleanup crews have removed four rail cars from the derailment site.
- The regional district said it will continue regular testing and inform residents of Savona and Walhachin of changes, with Grenier noting 'There are other privately owned and operated water systems that draw water from Kamloops Lake, including Tobiano,' and the report was first published Nov. 8, 2025.
