Off-Duty Philadelphia Police Officer Killed in Double Shooting
An off-duty Philadelphia officer died after being shot early Sunday, with a second man critically wounded as authorities seek public assistance with no arrests made.
Early Sunday, August 16, 2026, off-duty Philadelphia Police Officer Alhassane Barry was fatally shot outside an after-hours lounge on the 7200 block of Elmwood Avenue in Eastwick; a 35-year-old man remains in critical condition.
Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore revealed Monday that a verbal altercation preceded the shooting, which later turned physical outside the lounge before the suspect opened fire and fled toward Buist Avenue.
City records from the Philadelphia Department of Licenses and Inspections show violations dating to 2021, with the building labeled a "nuisance property" in January 2026 following years of neighbor complaints.
Mourning the loss, Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel stated, "We continue to ask the community for their prayers," as a viewing for Barry was held Monday at the Islamic Center of Philadelphia.
No arrests have been made; authorities are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction, with tips directed to the Philadelphia Police Department's Homicide Unit at 215-686-TIPS .
