Ofcom Opens Probe Into Royal Mail Delivery Failures After Missed Targets
Ofcom said Royal Mail delivered 75.7% of first-class mail next day over 12 months and will review whether further action is needed.
Postal regulator Ofcom has launched an investigation into Royal Mail regarding its persistent failure to meet crucial delivery targets over the past year.
Royal Mail's latest quality of service report showed only 75.7% of first-class letters reached their destination the next working day, down from 76.3% the prior year, while second-class deliveries achieved 90.2%.
Under the watchdog's targets, 90% of first-class mail should be delivered the next day and 95% of second-class post within three working days, despite Ofcom modernizing obligations last July.
A Royal Mail spokesman said improving service is a top priority, with the company implementing an Improvement Plan backed by £500 million of investment over five years while engaging with Ofcom.
Ofcom enforcement director Ian Strawhorne stated that while the company is now making progress, service levels remain unacceptable and any financial penalty would reduce funding for service improvements.
