Man Dies After Alleged Custodial Torture in Odisha; Three Police Personnel Suspended
Three police personnel were suspended after a preliminary inquiry into allegations that Susant Sahu died from custodial torture in Ganjam district.
- On Monday, Odisha Police suspended three officers and transferred an IPS officer following the death of 32-year-old Susanta Sahu, who died after being released from detention at the Kabisuryanagar police station.
- Mamajini Pradhan, the victim's wife, said police detained Sahu on May 25 regarding a stone quarry raid; she alleged he suffered physical torture and sustained injury marks before being released in critical condition on Sunday.
- Inspector-General Niti Sekhar ordered a preliminary probe, while Director General of Police YB Khurania directed the Human Rights Protection Cell to investigate the alleged custodial torture.
- Subsequently, officials transferred the entire staff of Kabisuryanagar police station and the Balichhai police outpost, while withdrawing Nitesh Kumar Mishra, the under-training IPS officer holding independent charge, pending the inquiry.
- The Biju Janata Dal recently cited parliamentary data showing nine custodial deaths between 2025 and March 15, 2026, equaling the total reported over the preceding four years.
